Chocolate Pumpkin Pie Smoothie

We got out early from school today because of Back to School Night last night.  I decided against having dance production practice after school since a) yesterday was a long day for all of us b) next week is Homecoming week and therefore will be long and c) I wanted to go home at 1.

I was starving of course because I hadn’t eaten since 7:30 this morning, so I took advantage of being home at lunchtime to make the smoothie I’ve had my eye on lately: Carrots ‘n’ Cake’s Pumpkin Spice Smoothie.  I tweaked it a little though because I didn’t have the exact ingredients on hand.  It still tasted amazing though!

And now it’s off to the Long Beach Half Marathon Expo!

Labor Day

I did not get to bed early enough last night.  At all.  I think it was a little after 1 when I finally got the light out.  Mat came to bed shortly after – he had worked until 11 and needed to eat and shower.

I still got up at 7, but I woke up around 6:15 having to pee SO bad.  Luckily I fell back asleep until my alarm.  I would have much rather slept in, but I wanted to run and knew I couldn’t do it if it was later and therefore hot.  I had considered doing an Insanity workout, but I wasn’t feeling it anymore this morning.  As it was, it was hard to get my butt out and run.  But get it out I did and I did my usual Monday 5 miles.

When I got back I went to the little gym in our complex hoping to do some ab work on an incline, but the thing they have in there isn’t really the best for that.  So, I used this machine (I have no idea what it’s called) where you sit and push straight out with your legs.  I guess it’s like squats but sitting?  I also used the 8 pound free weights, just one set of 20 reps for biceps and the same for triceps.  I’ve been using 3 pound weights so I didn’t want to jump to 8 and do too much too fast.  I really need to get some 5 and 10 pound weights to keep at home.

Then, after getting ready and making the bed and such, I made a smoothie:

This time I didn’t use chocolate syrup – I was very proud of myself.  I made a double so Mat could have one when he got back from the gym.  I used 1/4 cup dry oatmeal and cooked it ahead of time, 2 bananas (well not quite because one had a bruise), 3 scoops of peanut butter, and a (couple) handfuls of chocolate chips.  I also used about 6 coffee ice cubes and a few regular ones.  We both need an extra caffeine kick today…

Speaking of caffeine, naturally I had coffee, iced with milk and Hershey’s:

I’ve been thinking a lot the last day or so about whether or not to audition for The Nutcracker and then when we should start this whole house-buying process.  It’s all fantastic stuff, but it’s definitely a lot to think about.

On an unrelated note, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” just came on TLC.  It’s a rerun of course because it’s 11 am on a Monday, but every time it comes on I can’t tear my eyes away.  Is there something wrong with me?

10 Miles

This morning I got my butt out of bed at 6.  Yes, 6 am on a Saturday.  However, I got my light turned out just after 10 last night, and except for waking up once or twice randomly, I slept pretty well.  It makes all the difference when you’re trying to keep up the motivation to run long.  Especially when running has been rather ugh lately.  But more on that another time.

The 10 miles was actually not that bad.  Fortunately the sun never showed it’s face today, so it wasn’t hot and gross.  I still put on sunscreen though because I don’t take chances.  I also have a nice bathing suit tan going and I’d rather not have a running top/shorts tan yet.  🙂

I was craving something cool and smooth today when I got back, so I decided to make, yup you guessed it, a smoothie!  It was basically the same thing as this one, because apparently that’s all I like to make.  The only difference was that I threw in a few coffee ice cubes with the regular ones.  I couldn’t really taste any coffee, so next time I’ll have to use all coffee ice cubes.  But, I’d rather just use a few the first time in case it wasn’t good.

In the smoothie:

  • ice (regular and coffee)
  • banana
  • good size (read: a lot) scoop peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup cooked oats
  • handful chocolate chips (I may or may not have used more than 1 handful…)
  • chocolate syrup

I guess it’s more of a shake than a smoothie.  Eh, whatever.  The oatmeal and peanut butter give it some good oomph, the banana gives me much needed fruit, and the chocolate just makes it taste good.  I’m not a fan of super banana flavored smoothies.  In fact they sort of gross me out.  Chocolate syrup is the best way I’ve found to cut that flavor, regardless of whatever else is in there.

Between my water, smoothie, and coffee (iced with milk and Hersheys of course) I had a total liquid breakfast:

Yes, it is a large smoothie.  But it’s got to last me until dinner!  Or at least almost until dinner, I might have time for a snack at some point but I’m not sure.

Today we’re going to see The Dark Knight (Mat has been dying to see it) and then going to dinner at The Cheesecake Factory with the gift cards we got as a wedding gift.  Since we get our movie tickets at Costco, this date night is costing under $20.  Woohoo!

Hopefully I survive the movie.  It’s not that I don’t want to see it, I’m just not into those kind of movies like Mat is.  I’ll see pretty much anything as long as it’s entertaining, but 3 hour movies and I do NOT get along.  I just cannot sit still for that long, especially in a movie theater seat.  I’m hoping that since we waited so long to see it and since we’re going early in the afternoon that it won’t be too crowded and I can stretch out a bit.  🙂

I wish I could go to the Healthy Living Summit this year.  But it’s on the East Coast and is right as I’m going back to work.  Maybe next year it will be on the West Coast!?  Yes?  I should suggest that.  🙂

A Twist on the Smoothie

After my 5 mile run this morning I wanted something cold and refreshing for breakfast.  So, I made my current favorite smoothie but with a twist: I added strawberries.  🙂

It might sound weird to have strawberries with peanut butter, and maybe even with oatmeal.  But it was actually really good.  The strawberries added a nice extra natural sweetness for a change of pace.  Definitely a winner!

Strawberry Chocolate Peanut Butter Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp rolled oats
  • 1 banana
  • scoop peanut butter
  • 3-4 strawberries
  • ice
  • handful chocolate chips
  • chocolate syrup

Directions:

  1. Cook oats in microwave with 1/4 cup water 1-2 minutes or until they reach desired consistency.  Chill in fridge while assembling other ingredients.
  2. Add banana, peanut butter, strawberries, ice, and chocolate chips to blender.  Add cooked oatmeal.  Blend until it reaches desired consistency.
  3. Add chocolate syrup depending on individual taste.  Enjoy!

And Summer Begins!

I got home today around 12:30 after a lovely day at work that consisted of getting there at 8 and immediately turning in my grades.  I then went to my room and sat there for a few minutes before wandering back out to chat with other teachers.  Around 8:45 or so I went over to get my last checklist signature before turning in my keys and then went in to the library for the staff breakfast.

At the breakfast, some of the tables were decorated in fun themes.  I chose to sit at the Disney table, partly because I miss Disneyland (we let our passes expire last year and now they’re super expensive so who knows if/when we’ll get them again) and partly because the teacher who did the table decorations got two of these because she thought of me:

You know, since the wedding is in 2 weeks and all.  🙂

After the breakfast, which included saying goodbye to several teachers (one due to retirement, one due to displacement, and quite a few temporary teachers who aren’t coming back 😦 ), I sat in another teacher’s room and chatted.  We turned in our keys and went back to her room (she had left the outside door propped open) and chatted some more.  Finally around 12:15, we left.

Such a rough work day!  🙂

When I got home I cranked out the rest of my bachelorette packing, did my ab/arm workout, and watched tv.  Then I made a smoothie using cooked oatmeal for a late lunch.  I’m hoping it holds me over for a while and that whatever snacks my sister and the others have will do ok for dinner.

soooo good!

I’m not sure how much blogging will happen this weekend (possibly none), so until Monday…  😀

Countdown: SCHOOL IS OVER and 14 days until our wedding!

An Easier Run

I woke up this morning planning for 8 or 10 miles.  Usually I go for the higher number because I’m obsessive, and since both runs start the same I can make up my mind midway through.  That’s probably a bad idea because you usually tend to slack and choose the shorter route, which is exactly what I did.  But, it was probably for the best because I ran 14 miles both of the last 2 Saturdays, which I usually don’t do.  I tend to alternate between 14 and 10 on Saturdays, but today I just wasn’t feeling it as much.  Sometimes you just need a break.

Plus, if I feel the need for extra calorie burn, Mat and I can take a walk or I can use my bike.  🙂

After showering, cleaning up a bit, calling my grandmother to wish her a happy birthday, and wrapping the gift for the baby shower I’m going to today, I whipped up a smoothie for breakfast.  I based it off of the Quick Chiquita Banana Oatmeal Smoothie but made a few tweaks:

  • 2 bananas
  • 1/2 cup cooked oatmeal
  • ~1/3 cup peanut butter (instead of Greek yogurt)
  • handful chocolate chips (instead of almonds)
  • drizzle chocolate syrup (because it’s yummy)
  • ice

I tossed it all in the blender and blended away.  It came out really good.  I think using cooked oatmeal and leaving out the milk helped.  It was thicker than the smoothie I made last Monday.  The reason I subbed some ingredients was because a) I wasn’t feeling the yogurt and almonds today, even though it sounds like it would be really good, and b) I didn’t want to use the Greek yogurt because we didn’t buy any more this week and I know I’ll want it for snacks after work this next week.

It made less than last time because I used less bananas and was still loosely following the other recipe, but that’s ok.  I had a big glass for myself and left the rest for Mat to have when he gets home from work.

As usual lately, iced coffee with milk and hersheys.

I think I have an obsession with polka dot mugs

On the agenda for today: Stephanie’s (Mat’s cousin) baby shower and then a relaxing evening at home, probably including some jacuzzi time.  🙂

Have a good Saturday everyone!

My First Homemade Smoothie

After receiving a blender from my bridesmaid and best friend for 10 years Steph and her mom at my bridal shower, I’ve wanted to make my own smoothie.  Today, I finally did.

Chocolate Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal Smoothie (makes 2 large)

  • 3 bananas
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • ~ 1 cup milk (it’s a guess, I didn’t measure)
  • generous handful chocolate chips
  • generous scoop natural peanut butter
  • drizzle chocolate syrup
  • ice cubes

It came out quite delicious!  I’m rather proud of myself.  I have no idea how caloric it is, but it has pretty good stuff in it minus the chocolate.  But, everything is better with chocolate.  🙂

Mat devoured his in about 5 minutes.  And finished the rest from the blender.  I guess he liked it.  🙂
