We Went to the Mall Yesterday

And boy did we buy a lot.  Getting two paychecks certainly was amazing.  We paid off the credit card (and then promptly charged it again on protein powder and a fireproof safe, but that’s ok), set aside money for the house, Hawaii, and Christmas presents, and apparently decided today was going to be a shopping spree.  It wasn’t originally going to be like that – I just wanted to get new running shoes (which I needed desperately) and Clinique makeup because I’m running low.  We also figured we’d get our free Godiva truffle for September and get some Starbucks (Mat still has a gift card that he shares with me because he loves me like that 😉  ).

We got the Godiva and Starbucks.  I got my makeup.  I got my running shoes (I love that there’s a New Balance store at South Coast):

Aren’t they fun???  I LOVE the bright blue.  And they’re more lightweight than my previous pairs.  I’m actually excited to way up early and run!  New shoes are SO cushy.  You definitely know you needed new shoes when you put new ones on and think, “ohhhhh this is how they’re supposed to feel!”

We also wandered into Macy’s to get Mat some clothes.  He had a gift card from my parents from his birthday that he hadn’t used yet, and since we knew we had more money in the bank we figured we’d get him a few nice things that will be versatile and go with stuff he already has.

Enter his new suit:

Ain’t that spiffy?  Hehe.  We just sort of stumbled on the pants and coat.  They’re a charcoal gray, slim cut, and Calvin Klein.  Can’t say no to that!  Better still, the pants were only about $60.  As he was trying those on, I wandered and found a few shirts that could go with it.  Hence that nice blue shirt.  Then of course we realized he needed a tie, so we looked around and found a gray DKNY slim tie that matched perfectly and was on sale.

Yeah, it was a little more than we would usually pay, but I don’t really have a problem paying more for high quality stuff (when we have the money in the bank) that will last a long time.  It’s especially true for men’s suits because if you buy a classic fit it will never go out of style and he really will be able to wear it for years.

So then, off we went to Michael Kors.  I mainly wanted a new cell phone cover and I knew that they weren’t really any more expensive (ok, maybe $5 more, big deal) than most covers are.  My old cover was getting all scraped up and was from when I had a black iPhone and now I have a white one.

Of course, before we went in I had started thinking about how technically we could afford for me to get a new purse and wallet too, as long as the purse was one of the cheaper ones.

That was a bad thought.  This is what happened:


*sigh*  It totally looks like I have no self-control.  It really wasn’t that bad though.  The tote is a good size, but totes are less expensive because they have less compartments and things (at least that’s my assumption).  And the wallet was what you’d expect for a nice leather wallet.  Is it sickening that they all three match?  I love the vanilla “MK” design though.  I’m going to be super careful with it at work, that’s for sure.

The guy in the store (who was definitely gay) was awesome.  He was super helpful, super funny, and was almost in awe of my 3+ year old beat up Michael Kors purse I bought with birthday money so long ago.  I still love that purse, and it was almost sad to take everything out and organize the new one.  I’m sure I’ll still use it, just like I fully intend to use my old Dooney and Bourke again.

Despite my lovely new Michael Kors purchase, I still want Prada one day.  It’s my mission.  🙂

Whew, What a Morning

My alarm went off at 6 this morning and initially I did NOT want to get up.  I reset it for 20 minutes later, but then after about 5 minutes knew it was useless and I wasn’t going to fall back asleep anyway, so I got up.  I was originally planning for 14 miles today, but when I woke up I wasn’t feeling it anymore.  That happens a lot actually, but this morning I realized that it might not be the best idea to jump from 10 miles (which I’ve done for the past several Saturdays) to 14 miles when I’ve had rough runs because of the heat.  I quickly altered my usual 14 mile route to be a 12-miler, and got myself out the door.

Because it was cloudy and misty, it was actually a really good run.  I didn’t get super tired, and felt pretty good the whole time, just like I did a year ago when I was increasing my mileage for the first time in preparation for my first half-marathon (Long Beach).  I hope the weather stays this way, at least in the morning, because it’s SO. MUCH. EASIER. to run and takes a lot less mental motivation to get through a long run.

When I got back, I busied myself straightening up the apartment.  There were several bags of stuff my mom had given me from my old room that I needed to go through, and I also needed to get the last 3 place settings washed and put away.  While I was pulling stickers off everything, Mat texted me that he was probably going to leave work early because he didn’t feel well – waves of nausea, sinus stuff, and shakiness.  Naturally I got worried, and he couldn’t respond much because he was at work.  Around 10 he said he was coming home, and I went off to Target (still in my gross running clothes) to get ginger ale, saltines, and chicken noodle soup.  He was able to eat just fine, but he was totally exhausted.  He didn’t sleep much at all both Tuesday and Wednesday night because of early shifts, and on Wednesday night he felt hot and clammy even though the air was on.  The hot and clammy continued into Thursday, and he tried to take a nap that afternoon but couldn’t fall asleep.  He took NyQuil that night and last night so he could sleep, but I think it just wasn’t enough.  Drugged sleep isn’t quite as good as natural sleep anyway.  He’s taking a nap now, and hopefully will be better when he wakes up.  We’re going to an outdoor picnic/concert tonight with my parents, my sister, and her boyfriend, and we definitely don’t want to miss it.  We also have church in the morning for my mom’s high school choir reunion.

Whew.  See what I mean?

Around noon I finally got around to eating.  I had a banana and yummy overnight oats:


  • peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • handful chocolate chips
  • milk
  • strawberries and cereal added this morning

I had iced coffee with milk and Hershey’s too.


Now it’s time to finish laundry, enter quiz grades in the grade book, and make the quinoa salad for tonight’s picnic.  Have a good Saturday!

A Sunny Run. Again.

Because I stayed up late watching women’s gymnastics last night, I opted to sleep in a little bit later than usual.  Normally, I would get up at 7 in an attempt to beat the sun, especially on the 5 mile or longer run.  Today I got up a little before 8.

Bad idea.

When I first woke up it was still overcast, and it seemed like it was going to stay that way for a while.  Then I went outside.  The sun decided to rear its ugly head about a mile into the run.  And, since I thought it was going to stay cloudy, I hadn’t brought my sunglasses or water.  Fail.

Fortunately, I did put sunscreen on.  My mom taught me way back as a little kid that you can still get sunburned when it’s cloudy, possibly even worse than when it’s sunny because of the reflection of the sun through the clouds.

It was a rough run.  I wished I had my water, not just for drinking but for dumping on my head.  I’m telling you, it works.  And it’s wonderful.


I got home, stretched, did some ab work, and then had one of my usual summer breakfasts – cottage cheese deliciousness.

Naturally I also had iced coffee.  This time I had milk and hershey’s in it.

The best part about the morning?  When I got back from that run my wonderful husband had made the bed and already brewed the coffee and put my mug in the fridge to chill.  😀

Today is all about possibly cranking out some thank you notes and definitely working on the blog.

Boy Birthdays

Like other posts lately, this was written in advance.  🙂


Today is an interesting day.  It’s both my dad and husband’s (ooh it’s fun typing that in advance of our wedding heehee) birthday.  Yes, the two men in my life have the same birthday.  It’s cool, but also rather annoying.  I mean seriously, what do you do with that?

It’s also the day that we’re on our way home from our Fiji honeymoon.  *sniff*

Mat didn’t care that we were flying home on his birthday, and of course I made sure to check with my dad too.  Luckily, no one minded at all.  The funny thing is that we’re leaving Fiji late in the day and arriving at LAX earlier on that same day than when we left.  Aren’t time changes great?

But, it means Mat gets an extra long birthday!

El Torito Grill

El Torito Grill is one of our favorite restaurants.  We love their tableside guacamole.  We were originally going to use a restaurant.com gift card for dinner, but at the last minute decided we were really in the mood for Mexican food.

When we got there we had the option of sitting in the bar and enjoying happy hour drinks.  Um, yes!  Mat got a Cadillac margarita and I had a glass of Riesling for only $6 each.  In addition to the amazing homemade tortillas they give you, we shared an order of guacamole.  It’s delicious, but we both agreed that Mat’s guacamole is much better.  🙂

For dinner I had the shrimp enchiladas and Mat had the lobster quesadilla.  This was the first time we’d gone to El Torito Grill since we stopped eating chicken and pork, so it was interesting deciding what to have.  I’ve never thought to have seafood at a Mexican place, except for fish tacos, so it was kind of fun to branch out.

I tried a bite of Mat’s and he tried a bite of mine.  Both were really good – they both had a mango pineapple flavor to it and bits of mango with the sauce and rice.  The best part?  We both took home leftovers!

When we got home, besides separating the place cards into chicken and salmon piles, we had the last soy ice cream sandwiches with the Godiva chocolate bar and a few strawberries.  Perfect dessert!

I keep saying I’m going to stop eating junk since our wedding is coming so soon now, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.  Oops…

Academy Awards

Sorry, I’m not talking about the ones with the little golden statue and celebrities in fancy clothes walking the red carpet.  Though that would be fun.  Besides, it’s the wrong time of year.

There was a red carpet though.

I’m referring to the Academy Awards at school.  Since over half of the students I teach are in either the E-Business or Teach Academy, I get to be involved with some pretty cool stuff.  At the end of the year, we give award to students who have done an outstanding job academically, in the community, and in school in general.  At the end, each senior is given a medal and one of the teachers serenades them with Green Day’s “Time of Your Life.”

The whole thing went longer than I anticipated and I was wearing my Tiffany shoes from my bridal shower which meant my dogs were BARKING!  But, it was really nice to see all the kids so happy.  It’s a really special thing and is the best way to validate what you do.


For dinner Mat made a tofu stir fry but with a few changes from how he did it last time.  This time he marinated the tofu in soy sauce instead of soyaki (because we were out) and sautéed garlic and onion with red pepper flakes before adding the tofu and veggies to the pan.  For rice, we used the leftover lemon/cilantro brown rice we had made for last night’s bean and cheese burritos.  (Last night was a lazy night).  It sounds weird, but it was actually really good.  The red pepper flakes made it pretty spicy, but in a really good way.

We paired it with a basic salad that I scarfed down.  And a glass of wine.  🙂

And that was today, well the afternoon anyway.  The day was pretty basic (projects and returning books) and in the afternoon before going back for the awards I just sat on my butt on the couch.  I was really tired for some reason!

We’re almost to the end of the week.  Friday is coming and with it the 3 week mark til our wedding!

Countdown: 6 days of school and 22 days until our wedding

What’s Left

These are the things left to do:

  • Print/label place cards with meal choices (they’re already made on the computer)
  • Finish wrapping gifts (I started yesterday)
  • Meet with DJ (appointment next Tuesday)
  • Get marriage license (planned for next Wednesday)
  • Make final payments to vendors and confirm all times
  • Get my wedding day purse (to double as money dance purse)
  • Pick up dress the day before
  • Set up nail party
  • Get hair done (appointment scheduled for June 22nd)
  • Get my engagement ring cleaned
  • Decide on food/drinks for while we get ready
  • Finish making garter (thanks Mom!)

Hmm, I guess the list looks longer than I thought.  But it’s a heck of a lot shorter than when we started!  And most of those things are little and/or already in progress and/or have an appointment scheduled already.  I’d say we’re ahead of schedule!
