I wrote a review on our honeymoon, which I posted about a while ago.  I got a private message through TripAdvisor from a person asking a question about the experience, which I answered in detailed.  Last Friday the resort’s owner publicly posted his own response to my review refuting most of what I said.  That really bugged me, but so far I’ve ignored it.

Today I got another private message.  It made me laugh.  I really want to post it, but I’d rather not risk repercussions from that.  So, to summarize: the person claims to be a relationship and intimacy coach.  She asked if we were still married because maybe fears or concerns about our relationship caused the illness.

Mat and I at first just stared at each other in silence.  Then we burst out laughing.

The end.

An Anniversary and a New Name

Yesterday was our 1-month anniversary, aka our “month-aversary.”  Somehow that didn’t make it to the blog yesterday.  I can’t believe it’s already been a month since we said I Do!

If you discount the terrible honeymoon, the last month has been fabulous.  I absolutely love being married to such a fantastic man.

In other fantastic (unrelated) news, I’m proud to announce that the blog now has its own domain!  FINALLY!  Change those bookmarks!

Woo hoo!!  Life is certainly good.  🙂

When we got back from Fiji, I wrote a lengthy review of the resort and posted it on Yahoo and TripAdvisor.  I also wrote to Groupon’s customer support telling them about our experience in the hope that it would somehow prevent other people from also going to that resort.

I heard back from Groupon pretty quickly.  They said they were going to contact the resort.  It took several days to hear back, but when I did hear back from Groupon, they essentially reported that the resort had denied any claims of food poisoning and said that we could have gotten it from food and water in town.  They told Groupon that I had not been feeling well when we got there but there were no claims of food poisoning.

I was mad.  The resort KNEW that we had food poisoning – we had told at least 4 staff members personally about it.  And, another staff member who we hadn’t told somehow found out and asked on our last day how we were feeling.

The resort also gave Groupon the run-around about our room just like they did to us.

I wrote back to Groupon, again a lengthy one, clarifying everything.  I said that yes, I wasn’t feeling well when we got there on July 5th but that it was a urinary tract infection (I’ve lost all modesty about what type of infection I had) and that I was treated with amoxicillin by a doctor in town and felt better after a day or so.   The food poisoning happened on July 12th.  I told Groupon that we knew of several other people who were sick, and that in fact 2 of those people had been told by the resort that no one else was sick.  Basically, the resort knew that a lot of people were sick yet was denying everything.  I told them that it was very upsetting to heart that the resort had said these things.

This was yesterday.  This morning I decided to glance at my email while I took my walk.  I had already gotten another reply from Groupon.  They thanked me for the information and said that they had been able to get us a refund of $1298 and had cancelled one of the two Groupons we bought.

I.  Was.  Thrilled.  $1298 is a huge jump start on saving for our Hawaii trip next year.

I also have to say, I think VERY highly of Groupon right now.  A refund was certainly something we’d thought about but we weren’t holding our breath on it.  All we really wanted was to make them aware of how terrible the experience was so that other people don’t have to go through the same things we did.

But I’m not stupid.  I’ll take the refund.  🙂

The Honeymoon

The honeymoon post is going to come before the wedding post.  As I’ve mentioned in the last few days, the honeymoon was terrible.  I think the best way to sum it up is to copy/paste the review I wrote for a few travel websites.  You can find this on tripadvisor.com as well as Yahoo (I think).

My Koro Sun Resort Review:

My husband and I went to the Koro Sun Resort for our honeymoon July 5-15, 2012.  We went there expecting a luxurious experience complete with the pampering that one hopes for on a honeymoon in Fiji.  What we did experience was anything but luxurious.

First, a disclaimer: when we first got there, I was experiencing symptoms of an infection and had to find a doctor and get antibiotics.  This certainly put a damper on the beginning of the trip, but was by no means the resort’s fault.  Also, the weather was not ideal (windy and occasional bursts of rain), but this was also not the resort’s fault.  However, I mention these because while we try to separate these two things from the other negative parts of the trip, it’s entirely possible that it clouded our judgment a bit.

The first problem with the resort came with our room.  We had bought a Groupon for this resort which entitled us to either an Ocean View 2 bedroom bure or a Raintree 2 bedroom bure.  We picked the Ocean View bure, but when we got there we were put in a Raintree bure.  We spoke to the woman in charge of reservations several times over the course of the first 3 days we were there and kept being given the run-around as to why we weren’t in the correct room.  There was no apology, and in fact we were made to feel as though getting a good deal through Groupon was somehow our fault.  We finally gave up and stayed in the Raintree bure.

Throughout the trip, we often felt like the people at the resort didn’t like us.  We couldn’t figure out why.  We were nothing but polite, even when discussing the room issue.  There was also a general lack of activities, especially free activities.  Meals and service were agonizingly slow at times as well.  We met some other honeymooners at the resort, and found that they all felt the same way as us.  It was so depressing that we actually considered going home early after only about 4 days.  But, we figured we’d stick it out because after all, we were in Fiji.

The thing that ruined the trip the most for us happened on the 12th, only had a few days before we were leaving.  We got food poisoning.  Bad food poisoning.  At the risk of being graphic, we lost our breakfast and lunch that day, missed dinner, got very dehydrated and weak, and to top it off my husband had to walk down to the front to get water bottles, Sprite, and dry toast because there was no phone in the room to call.  We were completely out of it most of Friday, were able to eat somewhat (only cooked things) on Saturday, and Sunday were more thankful than ever to go home.  However, the whole experience gave me so much anxiety that I had a hard time eating in general.  I wasn’t able to eat an actual enjoyable meal until we got home on Sunday – I probably averaged 500 calories a day for 3-4 straight days.

As we recovered, we discovered that several other people had also gotten food poisoning.  One of the women we met who was also on her honeymoon got it on the plane when she left on the 12th too.

There were a few good things about Koro Sun: the waterfall excursion, snorkeling, Dobbs and Romanu who took you on these excursions, and some of the girls who worked in the restaurant and at the desk were very sweet and helpful.  But there was no apology for the food poisoning incident even though we told many of the employees what had happened.

When we landed in Los Angeles I had never been so excited and happy to see smog.  It was the honeymoon from hell – we will be going on a second honeymoon to Hawaii next year for our anniversary.

Boy Birthdays

Like other posts lately, this was written in advance.  🙂

Today is an interesting day.  It’s both my dad and husband’s (ooh it’s fun typing that in advance of our wedding heehee) birthday.  Yes, the two men in my life have the same birthday.  It’s cool, but also rather annoying.  I mean seriously, what do you do with that?

It’s also the day that we’re on our way home from our Fiji honeymoon.  *sniff*

Mat didn’t care that we were flying home on his birthday, and of course I made sure to check with my dad too.  Luckily, no one minded at all.  The funny thing is that we’re leaving Fiji late in the day and arriving at LAX earlier on that same day than when we left.  Aren’t time changes great?

But, it means Mat gets an extra long birthday!

I’ll be back to writing regular posts soon, including recaps of all things wedding!

Today We Leave!

Tonight we are leaving for our honeymoon to beautiful Fiji.  We’ll be staying for 10 nights at an all-inclusive resort (well, fancy drinks aren’t included, but that’s ok).  We got a Groupon deal for this resort and the Groupon included breakfast in bed, a private wine dinner in the rainforest, and a couples massage.  We bought 2 Groupons to make the trop 10 nights, so we’re getting 2 of each of those things.  🙂

Yeah, it’s pretty awesome.

The not so awesome part (yeah I know, you’d think there couldn’t possibly be something “not awesome” on your honeymoon) is that we have a LONG layover in Fiji’s international airport before we take our little island hopper plane to our resort’s island.  We leave tonight from LAX at 11:30, land in Fiji at 5:10 am on Thursday, and don’t leave again until 2:30 that afternoon.  That’s not how we scheduled it, but there were 2 flight changes since then.  Boo.  Oh well though.  At least we’ll be together and will get there eventually, right?

Coming home we have a similar situation but the layover isn’t as long, thank goodness.  But let’s not think about coming home yet.  We’re only just leaving!

Pray for safe travels!

The Last Day With All 5 Classes

Yup, that’s right.  Last day of all 5 classes.  And it was a modified (read: shorter) day so we could have our final staff meeting.  And, the staff meeting didn’t go as long as usual!  Double win!

I was already planning to stop by the nail salon where we’re having a nail party 2 days before the wedding so I could pay the deposit.  Since our meeting got out early, I was able to do that errand and still get home roughly when I would anyway on a modified Monday.  I then checked my ab workout off the list and was able to sit down at my stationary bike to watch tv/send email/blog.

I’ve noticed I’ve been blogging a little less often lately.  But don’t worry – I still love my blog.  My mind is just consumed with so many little things these days that I’ve been absentminded about taking photos and planning my blogging time.  That and I’ve been pretty tired too!  I’m hoping to get some guest posts scheduled for during our wedding/honeymoon so there’s still something to read.  🙂

Then, after the wedding and honeymoon and after things have calmed down, I’m hoping to take the blog a step further.  Perhaps a custom domain name and stuff.  We shall see what happens.  🙂

Dinner tonight is going to be an experiment with some random leftovers.  I promise to try and take pictures and write a thorough post on it.

I said I promise to try – with my brain lately, who knows.  😉

Countdown: 3 days of school and 17 days until our wedding.  AND 4 days until my BACHELORETTE!!
