New Year’s 2013

We aren’t big party people at all. We’re spending our New Year’s Eve at home just the two of us. So far, it’s been pretty good!

Breakfast
Breakfast this morning was a big bowl of cereal. If I’m not running and not at work, I really enjoy good old cereal and milk. I had coffee too, of course, this time in my new mug from mom-in-law. Thanks mom-in-law! 🙂

We didn’t do much all day and then around 3:00 walked to Target so Mat could use his fun money to buy Xbox points that can be used to buy games.

Dinner
Eventually we started dinner. Tonight’s dinner was in two parts. Part 1: cheese fondue!

It was delicious! The recipe was simple: 1 cup dry white wine, 1/2 pound each Swiss and gruyere cheeses, 2 tablespoons of flour, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and nutmeg. Served with sourdough bread, veggies, and apples.

Part 2 was mini pies. We made a sweet potato and bean filling and used the pie crust recipe from a book. They’re so cute!

And so delicious! The mini pie maker was from Mat’s parents for Christmas. Thanks! 🙂

Wine was on the menu too, of course.

And yes, Mat is playing Xbox while I type this. Like I said, total party animals over here!

The rest of the evening will be spent watching The Big Bang Theory, eating cookies, and eventually toasting with champagne while watching the ball drop.

Starbucks Time!

Today’s day of togetherness was to get delicious holiday drinks from Starbucks.  We’ve already done this several times this holiday season, but never with such deliberateness.  🙂

So, after work, I picked up Mat and off we went.  Since dance practice went until 5:30 today it made the most sense time-wise for me to pick him up and go straight there.  It’s exactly what we did yesterday for going out to dinner because I had a doctor’s appointment after work.  Actually, it’s what we did the time we bought the new Starbucks holiday mug too.  Apparently I’m the weeknight chauffeur?

I had my usual holiday drink: skinny peppermint mocha.  This time I had them put a little whipped cream on it too.  Why not?

I had a nice surprise in my box in the mailroom at school today: letters from kids.  They were thank you/Christmas letters that they had done in one of their other classes.  Some of them were really sweet!  Things like this are what make being a teacher seem worth it.

I went to the trainer at school today to ask about my knee.  She thinks it’s a pulled hamstring and recommended laying off the stretching for a few days and taking it easy on the running.  So, sadly, I’m going to skip tomorrow’s planned 3.5 mile run.  She said biking was ok, so I’m planning to get up and use my indoor bike for an hour or so while watching the news, just to make sure I get some sort of cardio in.  I hate missing runs, but I know that if I want it to feel better and heal I need to rest it.  I also want to go for my 11 miler on Saturday (taking it slow of course) so I know I need to rest it now.  I’m was planning on ballet tomorrow night too, and I think that will be ok as long as I don’t overstretch it.  When it was at it’s worst a month or so ago, it hurt really bad to stretch in ballet and so obviously I stopped stretching.  It started to get better.  Then, I got lazy with the icing and overworked it again this past Saturday.  I think I’m going to start being really diligent about icing after every long run no matter what.  This isn’t just recreational running anymore – it’s marathon training!

2 more days until I’m off for 3 weeks!!!  And we’re going to Solvang!!!  Weeeee!!!  😀

Go Out to Dinner

Last night for our 24 days of togetherness we picked go out to dinner. It was exciting because we never go out on weeknights. We decided on Corner Bakery because a) we really like it b) it’s not expensive and c) it’s close to home.

I had one of my favorites: the Santa Fe Ranch salad with chicken and avocado.

I also munched on saltine crackers before our food came because they’re by the drinks and are free. 🙂

I did something to my right knee. I pulled something in the back of it back during the Long Beach Half and it was starting to get better and then during my 14 miler thus last Saturday it started bothering me again. I ran 3.5 yesterday and was fine, but then during this morning’s 6 miler it started bothering me more. I’m not sure what’s wrong. The back of the knee pull has migrated around to the outside and front. I’m annoyed. I don’t want to miss out on my training!

Today’s day of togetherness was to think of the top ten things about our relationship. So we did just that.

This afternoon we finally got to see a house. It was a home in San Juan Capistrano that was attached on one side. It was nicer then I thought and had some good qualities, but we don’t think it’s for us. I kind if feel when we find the right house we’ll just know. At least I hope so. But, we’ll see what happens. We don’t know much about the neighborhood yet and that’s a huge factor in buying a house.

And with that, I’ve got 14 miles planned for tomorrow, rain or shine. Good night!

How is it Already 3:30?

During the week, the school day ends at 3:26.  Dance practice typically goes 1-2 hours after that.  During the week, it takes forever to make it to 3:30.

Today I just now realized it was 3:30.  What the heck?  I have an hour until my sister and her boyfriend are coming over so we can meet my parents for an early dinner before seeing A Christmas Carol.  Oy.

Last night I was holding Oakley and Mat was petting her belly which she doesn’t like.  I’ve frequently told him not to be mean to her and pet her belly, and last night it finally resulted in a nasty scratch.  On my hand.

I was rather mad at him for it last night.  But I’m not anymore because he brought me flowers after work today.

This morning I woke up at 7 after a late night at the dance festival.  I had my usual pre-run snack of graham cracker and peanut butter, but used the dark chocolate peanut butter instead.

I ran my first 13 miler since the Long Beach Half on October 7th.  As usual, I have no idea how long it actually took because I don’t (yet) have a GPS watch, but it was probably in the neighborhood of 2:05 since that’s about what my Long Beach time was.  I was tired for a good portion of it, but I pushed through.  This is marathon training, and there’s no going back.  I’d be lying though if I said I wasn’t nervous.  13 miles feels long to me right now since I haven’t done it in a while, and I’m looking to double it?  Yikes.

But reading blogs like Skinny Runner and Run Eat Repeat motivate me.  It’s fun that they’re fellow SoCal girls.  🙂

After my run I stretched, foam rolled, and had a chocolate coconut protein shake with milk and chocolate coconut protein powder.  I blended it with the stick blender to make it frothy.

I cleaned the kitchen, dusted, put things away, etc, and then finally showered.  I didn’t vacuum because the vacuum was clogged from sucking up pine needles last weekend, and I wasn’t in the mood to dig the toolbox out from the closet for a screwdriver so I could open up the vacuum and clean it out.  I left that for the man to do.

I had my usual banana (unpictured), iced coffee with milk and Hershey’s (also unpictured), and overnight oats.

It wasn’t white chocolate, just the jar.  What was actually in it was peanut butter, 1/2 cup oats. pumpkin, chocolate chips, flax seed, pumpkin pie spice, and milk.  I added granola right before eating.

It took me half an hour to write this post (don’t ask) so now it’s 4 pm and I have to do my makeup and hair for A Christmas Carol.  Amanda and Conor are coming over soon so we can drive together.

Love is in the Air

It may not be spring or Valentine’s Day, but love is still in the air. Today’s pick for 24 days of togetherness was this:

Luckily this was the first one I picked, unlike yesterday where it took at least 4 tries to pick one we’d actually have time to do.

Today was a peppermint kind of day.

I had my usual holiday drink, a grande skinny peppermint mocha, and a spur of the moment peppermint brownie cake pop. I figured if I had a sweet craving, the cake pop was better than a scone. I didn’t eat it until lunch, and it definitely hit the spot!

I totally forgot to try for Taylor Swift tickets today. Fail. Gotta find another way to get them…

The dance festival will be over by 10 pm today. Or earlier. I hope earlier. I’m actually in a better mood about it today than I was yesterday, but it will be a relief to have it done. The last two weeks of work before winter break are going to feel EASY once it’s behind me. Honestly, my biggest concern about it at the moment is being able to get a good night’s sleep tonight so I have enough energy for 13 miles tomorrow. I haven’t done that distance since the Long Beach half!

This weekend brings not only a 13 miler, but also seeing A Christmas Carol with my parents and sister and her boyfriend tomorrow night. Yay Christmas!
