Banana and Peanut Butter and Chocolate, Oh My!

Banana and peanut butter has been my go-to snack lately (sometimes with chocolate chips).  I used to never eat that large of a snack.  I’d stick with the banana only in most cases.  But now that I’m running so much more I’ve found that I really need the extra protein.  Obviously.

Learning that it’s totally ok to have a more substantial snack has been a bit challenging because of that whole ballet body image thing.  In the past, a larger snack would freak me out and make me think I was going to gain weight.  But you know what?  I haven’t.  I guess what they say about eating more actually helping your metabolism is true.

I’ve been eating a small mid-morning snack too.  Lately it’s been string cheese.  I’ve had a mini protein shake (just 1/2 scoop protein powder and water) after morning runs.  I haven’t really altered my main meals.  Or my desserts.

And you know what?  I’m not gaining weight.

I finally took the risk with eating more (in a good way) and didn’t freak out.  If you had told the bunhead Melissa that this would happen, she would have laughed in your face.

Pre-Race

Today has been focused on tomorrow’s half-marathon.  I got the cleaning done, took a lovely walk with Mat which we haven’t done since right after our wedding, and then enjoyed this:

Banana, strawberries, peanut butter, and chocolate chips for good measure.   🙂

Then it was all about tv before making dinner.  We’re still working on Battlestar Galactica on Netflix.  Our free month of Netflix ends tomorrow, but I have a feeling we’re going to keep it for at least another month so we can finish the series.

Funny how we go from almost canceling our cable to keeping our cable and adding Netflix.  Necessary?  No.  But I really feel that paying for certain things that keep you sane and help you relax is worth it.  We did manage to get the cable bill knocked down a few dollars and will hopefully be able to get some new promotions in January that will take it down again.

Be back in a bit with dinner!  It involves sweet potatoes.  🙂

A Good Run!

This morning my alarm went off at 5.  I was a bit groggy when I woke up (who wouldn’t be) but surprisingly not as tired as when I wake up at the same time on a workday.  Weird.  I got myself ready for my run and had a graham cracker with peanut butter on it before I headed out.

 

I did a slightly different beginning today.  I Mat suggested it because it would add about a mile to my nearly 12 mile run without it feeling like I was coming right back home and having to go past again like I mentioned last night.  It must have worked.  I started the run off kind of slow and easy so I wouldn’t risk tiring out.  I never really push it on long runs except to make sure I run the whole thing and finish it, but I also wanted to make sure this morning that I didn’t push it too fast at the beginning without realizing it.

I am SO PROUD of myself for getting through the full 13 miles without feeling fatigued.  Sure, I got tired, but in the usual way.  It’s a tiny personal victory to have a good run after a bad one last Saturday.

After my run, I showered and then got the dusting and vacuuming done.  It’s really nice to put my leftover running high energy into cleaning right away – that way it’s done and I don’t have to worry about it on Sunday and can rest instead.  I still need to clean the kitchen and Mat needs to clean the bathroom, but the rest is done.  The laundry is already started too.

Breakfast was a sliced banana with strawberries and overnight oats.

 

 

In this overnight oats:

  • 3/4 cup oats
  • peanut butter
  • chocolate chips
  • milk mixed with protein powder
  • granola (added right before eating)

I also had iced coffee with milk and Hershey’s:

 

 

 

 

The plan for the rest of the afternoon is to wrap my aunt’s birthday gift and hang around the house for a while.  We’re going to dinner for her birthday tonight and hopefully will have some time beforehand to wander around the mall a bit like we used to when we lived at home.  Oh, nostalgia.  🙂  It’s shaping up to be a very lovely Saturday!

Starving Afternoon

When I got home from work this afternoon, I was STARVING.  I’m not sure if it was the 1-mile run I pushed myself on with the dance kids today or the fact that I just had cereal for breakfast or both, but I knew I needed FOOD.  Normally I try to keep my afternoon snacks pretty small, but not today.

Banana with almond butter and some chocolate chips:

 

Speaking of that run, subtract 8 seconds from this time because my thumb missed the stop button 🙂

 

That’s right!  My mile time went from 8:32 two weeks ago to 8:16 last week to 8:00 today!  Woohoo!!  I wish I hadn’t missed the button, but it’s hard to hit it when you’re just finishing a run.  I know it was 8:00 though because I was looking at it as I crossed the line.

The kids are getting faster and stronger too.  I’m so proud of them!

Pizza Ratatouille Again!

Tonight we made pizza ratatouille.  I love pizza ratatouille.  I’m also very proud because it’s a recipe we totally made up.  And Mat was also just saying that lots of different veggies would be good in it – artichoke hearts, spaghetti squash, zucchini, eggplant, the list goes on.

We had a salad with tomato, red onion, and cucumber with the last of the Trader Joe’s caesar dressing.  This particular caesar is really good, but I wouldn’t buy it a lot because it’s more expensive.

 

 

We also had honeydew (not pictured) and the last of the red wine from the other night.  I didn’t even finish my half-glass though.  Red wine isn’t my favorite thing.

I had more chocolate chips tonight.  This needs to stop.

 

I need to sleep tonight.  Good night!

The Bad Run

Today’s run was bad.

I woke up at 5 am (yes, on a Saturday, I know, but I’d rather do that than suffer in the sun).  I was actually motivated this time to run 14 miles.  This hasn’t happened in a long time.  Usually when I wake up to run I have to force my butt out the door.  This lack of energy and motivation started sometime in the spring as my body and brain were getting more and more tired from planning the wedding and going through a very tough school year.  So, it’s pretty obvious that having excitement (and a little bit of nerves) was something I was going to welcome wholeheartedly and not put to waste.

So, off I went on my usual 14 mile route.  The first 3.5 miles are a loop around the complex and surrounding area and then I do an 11ish mile long run through Irvine.  Those first 3.5 miles were fine, a little tiring, but it often takes a while for my legs and body to get warmed up so I wasn’t too worried about it.  Then, about 4-4.5 miles into the whole thing, I noticed my legs were suddenly TIRED.  Like, way more tired than I’m used to experiencing.  Generally I’ll get tired but I’m able to push through it and in fact will force myself to push through because I HATE giving up.  But this was a different kind of tired.  This was that bad tired where your legs are essentially screaming at you to just STOP.

I paused and drank some water and shook out my legs, then started up again.  A bit later I was exhausted again.  Pause, drink water, shake it out, try again.  Finally I just decided that I needed to stop.  I had thought about stopping both times I’d paused earlier but wanted to try and see if I could work through it before giving up.  I always wonder if I really need to stop or if I’m just being “lazy.”  But something in my gut was telling me to stop.  Grudgingly, I listened to it and turned around.

During the 3 mile walk back my legs were fine compared to running, but I could tell they were tired.  I soaked in the tub for a bit to relax my muscles and then took a warm shower.  I then decide to knock out some chores: I changed the sheets, started laundry, dusted, vacuumed, and ran to Costco.  (Side note: Costco at 10 am on a Saturday morning is WAY better than any other time of day).  I finally got around to eating when I got back.

Breakfast

Today’s breakfast was overnight oats with chocolate protein powder:

 

In the mix:

  • peanut butter
  • 1/2 cup oats
  • generous handful chocolate chips
  • milk mixed with protein powder
  • granola added before I ate it

We recently bought this protein powder on Amazon.  It’s huge!

 

You can tell how big it is from the toaster oven, mixer, and crock pot in the background.

I mixed the protein powder into the milk before adding it to the oats so it would dissolve properly.  It definitely made the whole thing taste like chocolatey goodness, which I’m definitely not opposed to.  🙂

With the oats I also had a banana with a few strawberries,

 

iced coffee with milk and Hershey’s,

 

and chocolate coconut water to help my sore leg muscles.

 

I took a long time to eat because of switching out laundry, checking email, and chatting with my mom-in-law for a few minutes.  I’m also working on burning copies of our wedding pictures to give to our parents.  Then, this afternoon I’m going to my Kappa big sis’s bridal shower!

I sure hope next Saturday is more successful run-wise.  I’m so frustrated!

Labor Day

I did not get to bed early enough last night.  At all.  I think it was a little after 1 when I finally got the light out.  Mat came to bed shortly after – he had worked until 11 and needed to eat and shower.

I still got up at 7, but I woke up around 6:15 having to pee SO bad.  Luckily I fell back asleep until my alarm.  I would have much rather slept in, but I wanted to run and knew I couldn’t do it if it was later and therefore hot.  I had considered doing an Insanity workout, but I wasn’t feeling it anymore this morning.  As it was, it was hard to get my butt out and run.  But get it out I did and I did my usual Monday 5 miles.

When I got back I went to the little gym in our complex hoping to do some ab work on an incline, but the thing they have in there isn’t really the best for that.  So, I used this machine (I have no idea what it’s called) where you sit and push straight out with your legs.  I guess it’s like squats but sitting?  I also used the 8 pound free weights, just one set of 20 reps for biceps and the same for triceps.  I’ve been using 3 pound weights so I didn’t want to jump to 8 and do too much too fast.  I really need to get some 5 and 10 pound weights to keep at home.

Then, after getting ready and making the bed and such, I made a smoothie:

 

This time I didn’t use chocolate syrup – I was very proud of myself.  I made a double so Mat could have one when he got back from the gym.  I used 1/4 cup dry oatmeal and cooked it ahead of time, 2 bananas (well not quite because one had a bruise), 3 scoops of peanut butter, and a (couple) handfuls of chocolate chips.  I also used about 6 coffee ice cubes and a few regular ones.  We both need an extra caffeine kick today…

Speaking of caffeine, naturally I had coffee, iced with milk and Hershey’s:

 

I’ve been thinking a lot the last day or so about whether or not to audition for The Nutcracker and then when we should start this whole house-buying process.  It’s all fantastic stuff, but it’s definitely a lot to think about.

On an unrelated note, “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” just came on TLC.  It’s a rerun of course because it’s 11 am on a Monday, but every time it comes on I can’t tear my eyes away.  Is there something wrong with me?
